Filing Business Returns or Extensions?
One Week Left Until the Deadline
-Like Income Taxes, Business Personal Property Filing Deadline is April 15 -
Baltimore, Md. (April 8, 2015) – In Maryland, businesses must file personal property tax returns every year. And business owners have one week left to file their 2015 personal property returns, or file for a 60-day extension, in order to meet the April 15 deadline.
Unlike real property, which is the land and building where a business or home is located and is assessed once every three years, personal property is assessed every year. Examples of personal property include, but are not limited to:
- Furniture and fixtures;
- Office and industrial equipment;
- Machinery and tools;
- Supplies and inventory;
- And any other property not classified as real property.
“Assessing personal property rests solely on the shoulders of SDAT. Once completed, the assessments are certified to local governments where they are converted to tax bills by applying the appropriate tax rates,” says acting agency director, Owen Charles. Local government includes all 23 counties, Baltimore City, and some of the municipalities and towns throughout the state.
At the beginning of each year, SDAT mails a personal property return to most businesses on record. If a business doesn’t receive a return in the mail, they are still responsible for getting and filing a return on time.
For businesses who haven’t received a return, they are available on the
SDAT website. Businesses can also file the
returns or request an extension
online. If an owner is unable to file the forms online, they can mail them to:
